Most days, Malcom Harris-Gowdie clocks in at his local grocery store. He greets customers, stocks shelves and returns carts, a friendly face his neighbors see each week as they run their errands. But for one week each year, Malcom clocks out and leaves town to chase the dream he’s had since childhood: a full-time place behind the microphone.
The Sportscaster follows Malcom through the chaos of Super Bowl week as he works his fourth consecutive Super Bowl as FanSided’s Special Olympics Unified Reporter. He pushes through crowded media scrums to interview some of the NFL’s biggest stars, including George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey, Baker Mayfield and Bijan Robinson. And between questions about the game, he asks the one he cares about most: what advice would you give someone trying to make it in sports media?
The players Malcom interviews know something about pressure, doubt and being underestimated. So does he. Malcom has autism and cerebral palsy, and he’s used to people deciding what he can do before they’ve seen him do it. But as the answers pile up, a different question begins to emerge, one Malcom has to answer for himself: what does it actually mean to make it, and who gets to decide when you have?
